Academic Referencing Guide
How to Reference a Journal Article
Step-by-step guidance on constructing journal-article references in APA, Harvard and other common academic styles, including DOI and volume formatting.
1Why Journal Articles Matter
Peer-reviewed journal articles are the backbone of academic evidence. They undergo rigorous scrutiny before publication, making them the most credible source type for most assignments. Correctly referencing them demonstrates both academic integrity and methodological awareness.
2The 7-Step Metadata Extraction Pipeline
Before formatting any journal reference, extract these seven fields from the article:
- Authors — full surnames and initials (check for middle names).
- Year — publication year (check the PDF, not the online listing date).
- Article title — in sentence case, no quotation marks (APA) or single quotes (Harvard).
- Journal title — in title case, italicised.
- Volume and issue —
volume(issue)format. - Page range —
pp. X–Y(Harvard) orX–Y(APA). - DOI — full HTTPS URL for APA; lowercase "doi:" for Harvard.

4Common Pitfalls
| Issue | How to Handle |
|---|---|
| No DOI available | Use the journal homepage URL. In APA, add "Retrieved from" only if the content may change. |
| Advance online publication | Use the epub date as the year. Add "Advance online publication" in APA or "Epub ahead of print" in Vancouver. |
| Database permalink / proxy URL | Use the DOI or journal homepage URL instead — proxy links break when off-campus. |
| Missing issue number | Omit the issue field if not provided; do not invent one. |
